Welcome to the MoA–TSG Lab. The wiki is the bench. The work is Metrology of the Abstract. Adopt the tools or leave them on the rack — either way, the need doesn't wait.

  • Lab Note: A redlink is not a failure. It identifies Calibration Debt—work waiting to be measured, mapped, and calibrated.

Canonical Question: Is this specific exercise of authority legitimate, or does it cross into one or more of the six Slave Owner Game mechanisms?

Primary Measurand: The degree to which a specific exercise of authority remains bounded, justified, proportionate, accountable, and compatible with the retained or developing agency of the person subject to that authority, rather than operating through one or more recurring Slave Owner Game mechanisms.

Slave Owner Game/Legitimate Authority

Why this page exists as its own, extended treatment: Authority relationships — including parents, employers, teachers, coaches, clergy, and governments — are among the most consequential sites of both genuine control abuse and diagnostic misapplication. Ordinary authority may be mislabeled as the Slave Owner Game (whether through sincere error or strategic weaponization), while genuine Ownership, Agency Capture, Extraction, Dependency Creation, Moral Coercion, or Narrative/Identity Capture may also be excused merely because the controlling party occupies a recognized role. Both errors cause harm. This page therefore examines authority in greater depth than a short Boundary Conditions entry or mechanism-specific False Positives example can provide.

Relationship to Boundary Conditions and False Positives

This page does not introduce a new diagnostic principle. It applies two existing ones, in depth, to one specific and high-stakes case: authority relationships.

  • Boundary Conditions establishes, in general, that legitimate authority exercised within a consented or justified scope is outside this instrument’s operating range.
  • False Positives establishes the per-mechanism “on closer inspection” test for instances that superficially resemble a mechanism but do not actually satisfy it.

If the three pages ever appear to disagree, Boundary Conditions and False Positives are the general principles. This page must be read as an application of them, not a competing standard.

Authority Is Not Self-Validating

The existence of a recognized role, law, contract, tradition, credential, or institution does not by itself establish that every exercise of its authority is legitimate. Authority must still remain bounded, proportionate, accountable, and connected to the function that justifies it. A legitimate office or role can be exercised illegitimately.

Obedience, silence, apparent agreement, or failure to leave does not by itself establish legitimacy. Compliance may result from fear, dependency, developmental limitation, economic pressure, lack of alternatives, or prior conditioning. The diagnostic test examines recurring mechanisms and structural conditions rather than treating visible compliance as proof of consent.

The Core Test

Per Observable Behavior Rule and the “on closer inspection” test: does the authority relationship exhibit one or more of the six named mechanisms as an observable, recurring pattern — not merely whether the relationship is hierarchical, whether obedience is expected, or whether the person subject to the authority finds it unpleasant.

Question Legitimate Authority Slave Owner Dynamic
How is refusal or non-compliance treated? Consequences, where present, are tied to a defined obligation, proportionate to the breach, and open to review. In limited caregiving, developmental, or emergency contexts, refusal may be overridden only where necessary, proportionate, and bounded. Refusal itself is treated as disloyalty, defect, or illegitimate agency to be extinguished. Consequences expand beyond what is necessary to enforce any legitimate obligation.
Is the scope of authority bounded and justified? Scope is defined by agreement, duty, lawful mandate, protective necessity, or another identifiable basis, and remains limited to that basis. Scope expands beyond its stated basis, often gradually, without meaningful review or renewed justification.
Does the authority preserve or develop the other party's agency? Competence, understanding, appeal, and appropriate independence are supported rather than treated as threats. Dependency Creation, Agency Capture, or Narrative/Identity Capture is used to weaken the person’s ability to evaluate, refuse, appeal, or eventually function independently.
Is the authority accountable? The authority figure has defined duties and is subject to correction, review, removal, or other meaningful constraints. Obligations flow primarily one way; oversight is absent, captured, performative, or punished when invoked.
Are consequences proportionate and connected to a legitimate purpose? Restrictions and penalties are limited to what is reasonably necessary for safety, performance, learning, protection, or another defined function. Consequences are excessive, humiliating, identity-targeting, retaliatory, or designed to secure generalized submission beyond the immediate issue.

Interpretation Note: No single concerning answer necessarily establishes the Slave Owner Game. The instrument evaluates observable, recurring mechanisms and their cumulative pattern. A single disproportionate consequence, oversight failure, or disputed boundary may indicate a local authority failure without establishing the broader diagnostic pattern.

Not Every Illegitimate Exercise Is the Slave Owner Game

Authority can be mistaken, unfair, excessive, negligent, or improperly exercised without yet satisfying this instrument's diagnostic threshold. The Slave Owner Game requires one or more named mechanisms operating as an observable, recurring pattern. This page therefore distinguishes legitimate authority from Slave Owner dynamics without claiming those are the only two possible classifications.

Common Real-World Failure in Both Directions

Under-diagnosis — real abuse excused as “just authority”: Genuine Ownership, Agency Capture, Extraction, Dependency Creation, Moral Coercion, or Narrative/Identity Capture dynamics may be defended as normal parenting, management, religious leadership, or institutional structure. A recognized authority role can provide cultural or institutional cover even when the recurring mechanisms do not withstand closer inspection.

Over-diagnosis — ordinary authority mislabeled as the Slave Owner Game: Bounded, reciprocal, or developmentally necessary authority may be misdiagnosed as the Slave Owner Game through sincere conceptual overreach, incomplete information, emotional generalization, or strategic weaponization. The result may be the delegitimization of a legitimate authority relationship, rejection of a proportionate consequence, or misuse of the diagnostic label as a rhetorical weapon.

Reasonable Disagreement Zone

Some authority relationships will land in a zone of reasonable disagreement even after applying the Core Test. This can occur when:

  • Evidence is genuinely mixed or incomplete.
  • The relationship involves competing legitimate values or duties.
  • The case sits near a boundary (especially in caregiving, developmental, emergency, or institutional contexts).

When a case falls into this zone:

  • Do not force a binary diagnosis.
  • Explicitly mark the case as undecided / requires further information on record.
  • Document which specific questions from the Core Test remain contested and what additional evidence would resolve them.
  • Default to the most conservative practical stance until better information is available (i.e., avoid both strong accusations and strong defenses of the authority relationship).
  • Escalate to a human calibrator or second reviewer when the stakes are high.

Treating ambiguity as a stable category (rather than a failure to be resolved immediately) is part of maintaining diagnostic integrity.

Misapplication Is Not Proof of Bad Faith

Incorrectly labeling authority as the Slave Owner Game may result from sincere conceptual error, emotional overgeneralization, incomplete information, or strategic weaponization. The accusation should be evaluated by testing the authority relationship against the mechanisms, not by assuming the accuser’s intent.

Page Construction & Maintenance References

How we construct, maintain, and utilize each page as a self-admin control panel.

  • Distributed Instrumentation — the architectural principle behind why this page (and every page) carries its own live instrumentation, rather than relying on a separate central dashboard.
  • Page Structure Calibration Checklist — the Step 0 structural pass every page should pass before content calibration begins; this page's own structure should be checkable against it.
  • Template:New Page Seed — the seed template this page's basic structure was built from.
  • Calibration Log: When to Create One — the decision procedure this page's own Talk-only vs. dedicated-log status was decided against.
  • Framework Features Reference — maintains consistency and traceability across the framework's structural features while avoiding unnecessary maintenance overhead; consult before introducing a new structural pattern this page might otherwise duplicate.

Calibration Procedure

In development. See Calibration Procedure for current status. No formal step-by-step procedure exists yet beyond the practices demonstrated across individual pages developed during the initial creation of this project.
