Nonconformance Reporting Procedure

From The Sovereign Games

CYCLE Calibration position — Active Development

This page is a conceptual instrument under Permanent Beta. It declares a real calibration position, not a finished product waiting to ship. Checking continues; an edit is only required when evidence demands it. Stage: Seed to Fruit.

Feedback welcome — especially clarity, failure modes, and calibration gaps. Use discussion or Contribute.

Canonical Question: When a calibration reveals a page's content or structure is genuinely out of tolerance — not just incomplete, but wrong — what's the required response, and where does it get recorded?

Nonconformance Reporting Procedure

Distinct from routine recalibration: most calibration reports document normal, expected refinement — tightening wording, adding evidence, closing an open item. A Nonconformance is different: it documents a specific finding that something was actually incorrect, not merely underdeveloped. Examples from this project's own history: Effects' original "primary reason for civilizational collapse" overclaim; The Cost of Control's original universal-downfall claim; the SMW namespace bug, a real structural failure. Nonconformance is for findings of this weight, not ordinary tightening. Distinct from Development Breadcrumb: Breadcrumb-Open marks intentional incompleteness under construction. Nonconformance marks out-of-tolerance error. Do not file ordinary WIP gaps as nonconformances, and do not treat the breadcrumb index as the narrative archive of nonconformance findings.

Description Defines nonconformance (vs routine recalibration and vs breadcrumbs), where the narrative finding is recorded, how drift_report_status makes it query-visible, and resolution as append-only follow-up — without triple-logging or using the breadcrumb index as the finding archive.

Where the narrative finding is recorded

One primary narrative home per finding — not three.

Kind Primary narrative home Status field
Content nonconformance (a page claim or page-local structure was substantively wrong) Standard Calibration Report / finding entry on that page’s Calibration Log or Talk (per Calibration Log: When to Create One and Calibration Report Standard Format) Set drift_report_status on that page immediately on discovery (before fix), including Nonconformance-Open or Nonconformance-Open-With-Dependencies as appropriate
Site / infrastructure nonconformance (template, extension, shared mechanism broken) Known Site Issues & Fixes (stand-alone record; Talk there if discussion is needed) Set status on the affected template or infrastructure page(s) when they carry Admin Page Status; do not use Breadcrumb Tracking as the write-up

Proportionality (development noise): Formal nonconformance is for out-of-tolerance error on expectations that should already hold. Developmental alignment while a standard or page is under Active Development is normally logged in the page calibration report / Open Calibration Items — not flooded into NCR-style findings. Recurring failures on pages expected to conform → formal nonconformance.

What the “index” is (and is not)

  • Query visibility: Pages with open nonconformance status are discoverable via Semantic/Cargo queries on drift_report_status (and any dashboard built from that). Setting the field correctly is the indexing step.
  • Breadcrumb Master Index: Tracks development breadcrumbs and may surface pages whose status list includes open values. It is not the place where nonconformance findings are authored or solely documented.
  • Red flag: Status set with no narrative finding in the primary home above.
  • Not required: Copying the full finding text into Breadcrumb Tracking, or logging the same narrative a third time “for the index.”

`drift_report_status` — options

This field is a list (multiple values may apply, semicolon-separated). A page can have an open breadcrumb and an open nonconformance at the same time — record both; do not collapse into one fake value.

Value Meaning
Breadcrumb-Open Active Development Breadcrumb / intentional incompleteness — see Breadcrumb Philosophy. Not a substitute for nonconformance narrative.
Nonconformance-Open Nonconformance logged; not yet resolved; contained to this page.
Nonconformance-Open-With-Dependencies Nonconformance logged and dependents may need review (ripple). Seeing this value is the ripple trigger.
Resolved-Unverified Fix claimed; independent verification not yet done.
Disputed Finding or resolution contested.
None open Nothing open. Valid only alone — never combined with other values.

Required elements of a nonconformance finding

Element Purpose
What was claimed/built vs what was actually true/correct States the gap precisely
How it was found Traceability (round-robin, bug hunt, checklist, field use, etc.)
Severity — dependents affected? Chooses Nonconformance-Open vs Nonconformance-Open-With-Dependencies
drift_report_status set immediately, before the fix Query-visible in real time
Resolution as a follow-up dated entry on the same narrative home (append-only — do not silently edit away the original finding) Preserves failure and fix; see Reality Override Game on partial update as camouflage

Future: A standardized nonconformance block inside the page calibration report format will be locked when Calibration Report Standard Format is updated — same elements, less freestyle.

Maintain a query page (or section) that lists pages where drift_report_status contains nonconformance values, with links — for example Semantic:

{{#ask:
 [[Has drift report status::~*Nonconformance*]]
 |?Has drift report status
 |?Last reviewed
 |format=table
 |sort=Last reviewed
 |order=desc
}}

Adjust property names to match the live Admin Page Status #set / Cargo mapping. Goal: clickable list of open nonconformances without using Breadcrumb Tracking as the archive.

Relationship to other standards

See the Game. Refuse the Game. Build Better.

Open Calibration Items

  • Add standardized nonconformance subsection to Calibration Report Standard Format (template for page-level cal reports).
  • Publish live #ask (or Cargo) nonconformance dashboard page and link it from here once property names are confirmed on Special:Browse samples.
  • Clear any residual practice of pasting full NCR write-ups only into Breadcrumb Tracking.

See the Page Transparency & Calibration section above for this page's Calibration Log / Decision Records / Talk links.

Structural Connections

Page Transparency & Calibration

This page is under continuous calibration in line with the Permanent Beta principle.

Public Discussion Welcome

Questions, suggestions, feedback, disagreement, and proposed improvements are welcome on the Talk page.

Light rules:

  • Prefer evidence and concrete examples over slogans.
  • Apply Diagnostic Inversion Test when criticizing — the same standard to this page that you would apply elsewhere.
  • Distinguish observation from conclusion.
  • Calibration entries and Decision Records are maintenance records; public discussion belongs in ordinary Talk threads.
  • This framework remains in Permanent Beta. Better calibration is always in scope.

Page Construction & Maintenance References

How we construct, maintain, and utilize each page as a self-admin control panel.

  • Distributed Instrumentation — the architectural principle behind why this page (and every page) carries its own live instrumentation, rather than relying on a separate central dashboard.
  • Page Structure Calibration Checklist — the Step 0 structural pass every page should pass before content calibration begins; this page's own structure should be checkable against it.
  • Template:New Page Seed — the seed template this page's basic structure was built from.
  • Calibration Log: When to Create One — the decision procedure this page's own Talk-only vs. dedicated-log status was decided against.
  • Framework Features Reference — maintains consistency and traceability across the framework's structural features while avoiding unnecessary maintenance overhead; consult before introducing a new structural pattern this page might otherwise duplicate.

Calibration Procedure

In development. See Calibration Procedure for current status. No formal step-by-step procedure exists yet beyond the practices demonstrated across individual pages developed during the initial creation of this project.
