This criteria list is a first attempt at operationalizing success without reintroducing win/lose language. It should be tested against real cases, particularly cases where the controller faced zero consequence. Does the definition hold up in practice, or does it require adjustment when non-consequence feels morally unsatisfying?

Welcome to the MoA–TSG Lab. The wiki is the bench. The work is Metrology of the Abstract. Adopt the tools or leave them on the rack — either way, the need doesn't wait.

  • Lab Note: A redlink is not a failure. It identifies Calibration Debt—work waiting to be measured, mapped, and calibrated.

This page is a conceptual instrument under Permanent Beta. It declares a real calibration position, not a finished product waiting to ship. Checking continues; an edit is only required when evidence demands it. Stage: Seed to Fruit.

Feedback welcome — especially clarity, failure modes, and calibration gaps. Use discussion or Contribute.

Canonical Question: What actually counts as success in responding to this pattern — and can "winning" against a slaver ever itself be success, or does that framing already fail?

Primary Measurand: The degree to which the recurring Slave Owner Game mechanisms have ceased operating within the relationship, individual, or system being evaluated, without the responding party adopting those mechanisms in the process.

Slave Owner Game/Measuring Success

Within this framework, "winning" is not treated as the success criterion because it measures the outcome of a contest rather than whether the underlying pattern has actually ceased. "Winning" implies a game was played and one party defeated the other. If you defeat someone by out-controlling them, out-manipulating them, or outlasting them through force of will, you have not refused the Slave Owner Game — you have played it and won a round of it.

Per the hub page's own core warning: "The moment you weaponize it to own others, you have entered the game you claim to oppose." This page therefore measures whether the pattern itself — the six mechanisms operating as a recurring pattern — has actually ceased.

What Success Is Not

  • The other party backing down, submitting, or losing the confrontation. That is an outcome within the pattern, not an exit from it — it simply changes who currently holds the mechanism.
  • Retaliation, revenge, or "giving them a taste of their own medicine." Using the same mechanisms back on the original controller is not refusal; it is participation.
  • Total victory in the sense of the other party's complete defeat, humiliation, or ruin. That outcome may occur as a side effect of legitimate consequence, but it is not itself the measure of success.

The other party may lose power, face consequences, or leave the relationship. Those outcomes may accompany success, but they are not themselves the measurand.

What Success Actually Is

Success is the pattern ceasing to operate — on you, and where possible, in the system generally.

Concretely, this means:

  • The six mechanisms are no longer being applied to you as a recurring pattern.
  • Your own agency, judgment, and capacity for genuine connection are intact or being rebuilt.
  • You have not adopted the mechanisms yourself in the process of exiting.
  • Where a system-level response was possible, calibration occurred rather than mere personal exit.

Interpretation Note: Success is measured by whether the recurring pattern has ceased, not by whether every desirable outcome occurred. Justice, punishment, reconciliation, forgiveness, or personal healing may accompany success, but none of them individually constitute the instrument's primary measurand.

Levels of Success

Success can occur at different scales:

  • Individual Success — The pattern has ceased operating on you personally.
  • Relational Success — The pattern has ceased within the specific relationship.
  • System Success — The pattern has ceased structurally (e.g., through policy or institutional change). This is the strongest form of success but is not required for individual success.

Personal exit without systemic correction is still success for you individually, but it is a narrower success than correction that prevents the same mechanism from being applied to others.

Recovery vs. Pattern Cessation

Pattern cessation and personal recovery are related but distinct.

The pattern may cease while significant internal effects (trauma, hypervigilance, eroded trust) remain. Healing is often gradual. Success in refusing the game does not require immediate emotional resolution — only that the recurring external mechanisms have stopped operating.

A Genuinely Hard Case: What If the Controller Faces No Consequence at All?

By the definition above, you can achieve full success — the pattern ceases to operate on you, your agency is intact, and you never adopted the mechanisms — while the person who ran the pattern faces no consequence whatsoever and may continue running it against others.

This is uncomfortable but consistent: this page measures your success in refusing the game, not the controller’s punishment. Whether and how the controller faces consequence is a separate question, addressed on Slave Owner Game/Justice and Consequences and Slave Owner Game/Sovereign Justice.

Observable Indicators of Success

Success can be observed through indicators such as:

  • Recurring Slave Owner Game mechanisms are no longer present
  • Restored capacity for independent decision-making
  • Reduced or eliminated dependency created by the pattern
  • Restored access to competing information and perspectives
  • Reduced coercive pressure in the relationship or environment
  • Sustainable exit or boundary that does not require ongoing defense through the same mechanisms

Bystander Contribution

People who support, witness, or intervene on behalf of someone refusing the Slave Owner Game sometimes claim success for themselves. This requires careful handling.

Support from others can be genuinely valuable. However, bystander contribution does not automatically constitute success in refusing the pattern. Success remains defined by whether the recurring mechanisms ceased operating — not by whether someone helped, spoke up, or provided emotional support.

For a bystander’s involvement to meaningfully relate to success, it must be evaluated against the same standard: Did their actions contribute to the actual cessation of the pattern, or did they primarily serve other functions (signaling, emotional processing, status, or conflict escalation)? Premature claims of success based on having “been there” or “spoken out” risk reintroducing the same win/lose framing this page rejects.

Success Is Not Moral Perfection

Occasional imperfect responses or failures under pressure do not automatically mean someone has entered the Slave Owner Game as a recurring pattern. As elsewhere in this framework, diagnosis depends on observable, recurring mechanisms rather than isolated acts.

Development Breadcrumb

This criteria list is a first attempt at operationalizing success without reintroducing win/lose language. It should be tested against real cases, particularly cases where the controller faced zero consequence. Does the definition hold up in practice, or does it require adjustment when non-consequence feels morally unsatisfying?

See the Game. Refuse the Game. Build Better.

Page Construction & Maintenance References

How we construct, maintain, and utilize each page as a self-admin control panel.

  • Distributed Instrumentation — the architectural principle behind why this page (and every page) carries its own live instrumentation, rather than relying on a separate central dashboard.
  • Page Structure Calibration Checklist — the Step 0 structural pass every page should pass before content calibration begins; this page's own structure should be checkable against it.
  • Template:New Page Seed — the seed template this page's basic structure was built from.
  • Calibration Log: When to Create One — the decision procedure this page's own Talk-only vs. dedicated-log status was decided against.
  • Framework Features Reference — maintains consistency and traceability across the framework's structural features while avoiding unnecessary maintenance overhead; consult before introducing a new structural pattern this page might otherwise duplicate.

Calibration Procedure

In development. See Calibration Procedure for current status. No formal step-by-step procedure exists yet beyond the practices demonstrated across individual pages developed during the initial creation of this project.

Page Transparency & Calibration

This page does not have its own dedicated Calibration Log or Decision Records — both are tracked at the Main Page level.

This page is under continuous calibration in line with the Permanent Beta principle.
