The Legacy & Continuity Game is about the active stewardship and transmission of what is valuable across generations.

While the Time Horizon Game is primarily about how far ahead you are willing to think and plan, the Legacy & Continuity Game is about what you intentionally preserve, improve, and pass on to those who come after you.

Core Concept

Civilizations that fail to consciously transmit high standards, functional institutions, useful knowledge, and strong families tend to decay over time — even if they achieve short-term success. Those that treat themselves as stewards rather than temporary occupants are far more likely to produce lasting value.

Legacy thinking is not about nostalgia. It is about deliberate transmission and improvement across time.

Why It Matters

Without intentional legacy and continuity practices, even successful societies tend to:

  • Consume capital (financial, cultural, institutional, and moral) rather than replenish it
  • Optimize for the present at the expense of future generations
  • Lose hard-won knowledge, standards, and institutional competence
  • Allow extractive dynamics to degrade what previous generations built

Key Practices

  • Building and maintaining strong families capable of transmitting values and capability
  • Preserving and refining institutions, knowledge, and standards that have proven effective
  • Deliberately selecting for and rewarding traits and behaviors that benefit future generations
  • Creating things (companies, knowledge, culture, infrastructure) designed to outlast the individual
  • Maintaining continuity of purpose across time rather than resetting with each generation

Relationship to Other Games

  • Acts as a counter to short-term Moloch dynamics and present-focused extraction
  • Requires multi-generational Skin in the Game
  • Complements Builder Mindset and Hidden Mastery
  • Depends on a sufficiently long Time Horizon to be meaningful

Sovereign Approach

  • Treat yourself as a steward, not just a consumer or participant in civilization.
  • Focus on building things that can be improved and passed on, rather than extracting maximum short-term value.
  • Prioritize the transmission of capability and character over the transmission of wealth alone.
  • Refuse to participate in systems that systematically degrade what future generations will inherit.

We are not temporary renters of civilization.

We are participants in a chain of transmission — either strengthening or weakening what we pass on.

See the Game. Refuse the Game. Build Better.
