Why Metrology of the Abstract Exists
One line: We exist so abstract instruments — words, claims, standards, models, policies — can be checked, improved by their owners, and used to build without the only courts being confidence, authority, or exhaustion.
Profession sentence: Metrology exists to create a continuous improvement loop between reality, measurement, and the standards people use to build. Checkability makes that loop trustworthy; the certificate is not the product — incomplete metrology is a certificate with no improvement path.
What we are not

Improving calibrations and documentary standards is necessary practice. It is not the final “why.”

1. Continuous improvement (the profession’s engine)
Metrology is not only a maintenance profession. It is a continuous improvement profession.

Same pattern as the physical world: an organization develops a tool or working standard; measurement makes it checkable; discrepancy and recommendations drive the next design; higher references and methods face pressure to refine over time. Effect is real. Ownership of the Domain SI is not transferred.
2. Checkability (third path)
Physical metrology exists so “how long is this?” need not be settled by whoever is loudest or most trusted in the room. Metrology of the Abstract reaches for the same job one layer up: a way to pressure “is this claim, standard, or diagnosis sound?” that does not depend only on who says it, how confidently, or which institution backs them.

Not the goal: forced consensus or a new priesthood. The goal: disagreement can move from personality and faction to checkable structure — the same class of social technology as a shared measurement standard.

Checkability is necessary. It is not the whole profession: without the improvement loop (owners upgrading their standards from recommendations), metrology collapses into grading theater.
The third path only stays honest if others can re-run the check. Independent labs and federation rules live primarily on the Lab On-Ramp / network pages; the principle belongs here.
3. Domain SI stays theirs (constitutional boundary)
Abstract domains have no physical SI. The reference that plays the SI-role is domain-defined (dated text, published standard, locked policy, etc.).

4. Recommendations (mechanism of improvement)
In physical calibration, the lab reports as-found / as-left condition and often recommends adjust, repair, limit range, or shorten interval. The owner decides. The lab does not take the factory.
MoA recommendations serve the same role: restore or protect fitness for stated use so the owner can keep operating under a known relationship to their reference.

5. Symbiosis with builders (civilizational feedback)
Without a durable loop between making and measuring, complexity does not compound safely. Reliable technology depends on cultures that treated measurement as infrastructure — not as optional decoration.
MoA’s bet: abstract instruments that never enter a measure-and-improve loop stay rhetoric. Those that do can be improved by their owners the way physical standards are.
6. Civilizational coupling to reality (long-term orientation)
Uncalibrated models, policies, and institutional instruments impose real costs: foot-shooting, capture, broken coordination, loss of the ability to build on purpose.
Orientation — not a proof claim that MoA already couples civilization: Keep human systems in a usable relationship with reality long enough that See → Refuse → Build remains possible as practice, not slogan.
7. Standing and honesty (integrity safeguards)
- Default standing is Self-Assessed until rules for Confirmed (or higher) are met by more than author-only claim.
- AI + human production is allowed; multi-model agreement is not automatic Confirmed.
- Process contamination is nonconforming work — log and re-run or openly amend.

Short answers
- Why does the profession exist? To run a continuous improvement loop between reality, measurement, and the standards people use to build.
- Why checkability? So that loop is trustworthy — not only “trust me / trust them.”
- Why recommend? So owners can improve their instruments and standards (same game as physical cal labs).
- Why march on? So building remains possible under truth-costly conditions.
- Are we NIST? No. We borrow the profession’s shape, not the institute’s mandate.
