Overview

The Reality Override Game is the recurring attempt to preserve an existing internal model when reality demonstrates that the model is incomplete, inaccurate, or false.

Rather than updating the model through feedback, the player overrides, reinterprets, resists, or explains away reality in order to protect the model.

The central question this game asks is:

When your model and reality disagree, which one has authority?

This game operates at a high level. It frequently generates, intensifies, or protects many other diagnostic patterns.

Core Pattern

When reality conflicts with the preferred model, the player is faced with a choice:

  • Update the model to better match observable reality (Mastering Reality).
  • Override reality to protect the existing model (Reality Override Game).

The Reality Override Game chooses the second option. The model is treated as primary. Reality is treated as something to be managed, reframed, or resisted.

Common tactics include:

  • Generating new justifications or explanations
  • Moving the goalposts
  • Attacking the source of disconfirming evidence
  • Introducing new scapegoats or external causes
  • Redefining terms so the model cannot be falsified
  • Minimizing or denying the significance of contradictory results

The model remains fixed. Only the defensive maneuvers change.

How It Works

The game operates through a reinforcing loop:

  1. A model is held as important (identity, ideology, self-image, institutional narrative, etc.).
  2. Reality produces evidence that challenges the model.
  3. The player experiences this as a threat rather than as data.
  4. Defensive tactics are deployed to neutralize the threat.
  5. The model is preserved.
  6. The loop repeats when new contradictory evidence appears.

Over time, this creates increasing distance between the player’s internal model and external reality.

Connection to Other Games

The Reality Override Game often fuels or protects other patterns, including:

  • Whack-a-Mole Game — Continuously generating new justifications to protect the model.
  • Entrenchment Spiral — Deepening commitment to the model as it becomes more disconnected from results.
  • Narrative Control Game — Shaping information and language to prevent the model from being threatened.
  • Status/Signaling Game — Using the model as a source of identity or group belonging that must be defended.

Sovereign Response

See the Game

Recognize when you (or others) are treating an existing model as more important than observable results. Watch for the rapid deployment of new justifications, reframings, or attacks when the model is challenged.

Refuse the Game

Refuse to grant any model automatic immunity from reality. Do not allow the preservation of a model to take priority over accuracy and effective action.

Build Better

Practice the calibrated alternative:

  • Treat disconfirming evidence as data rather than an attack.
  • Update models when they are shown to be inadequate.
  • Maintain Permanent Beta as the default stance toward your own beliefs and conclusions.
  • Prioritize long-term alignment with reality over short-term model protection.

Connection to Mastering Reality

Mastering Reality and the Reality Override Game are opposing orientations.

Mastering Reality treats reality as the final authority and uses feedback to improve the model. Reality Override treats the model as the final authority and uses defensive tactics to manage or resist feedback.

These two patterns cannot operate simultaneously. One must give way to the other.

A Universal Pattern

Reality Override is not limited to any particular ideology, group, or personality type. It appears across all domains of human activity — personal beliefs, institutions, political movements, religions, corporations, and scientific communities.

It is not a flaw that exists only in others. It is a recurring tendency in all human systems, including our own.

The diagnostic question is not “Who is playing this game?” but “Where am I playing this game right now?”

Calibration Warning

This game becomes especially dangerous when it operates unconsciously. The more a model is tied to identity, status, or emotional comfort, the more likely the player is to override reality without realizing they are doing so.

Strong diagnostic inversion and regular results tracking are the primary defenses against this pattern.

Partial Update as Camouflage

A common and difficult-to-detect form of Reality Override occurs when a person appears to update their model while actually preserving its most load-bearing elements.

In this pattern, the player concedes a peripheral detail, adjusts language, or accepts a minor correction while keeping the core prediction, identity attachment, or conclusion untouched. From the outside (and often from the inside), this can look like genuine calibration — evidence was accepted, language was updated, the person “admitted they were wrong about something.”

The diagnostic test is not whether any update occurred, but whether the part of the model that was doing the predictive or identity-protective work was revised. If the concession leaves the original model’s functional core intact, the reinforcing loop has simply moved one level deeper and become harder to observe.

This form of camouflage is especially common when the model is closely tied to identity, group belonging, or emotional comfort. Strong diagnostic inversion requires asking not just “Did they update?” but “Did they update the part that mattered?”

Training

Recognition and resistance to the Reality Override Game are developed through the practices of Hidden Mastery and the orientation of Mastering Reality.

This game remains in Permanent Beta.
