Overview

The End-State Override Game is the recurring pattern of protecting an idealized future state by discounting, rationalizing, or overriding present evidence, costs, or failures. This game begins when a compelling vision of the future is granted immunity from correction by current reality. The defining question is whether the promised destination is allowed to override observable results and feedback. This is distinct from the Reality Override Game. While Reality Override protects existing models in general, the End-State Override Game is specifically driven by future orientation — the model being protected is a vision of what *should* or *will* happen.

What This Game Is Not

The End-State Override Game is not simply having long-term goals or ambitious visions. A calibrated vision remains open to revision based on evidence and results. An overridden vision demands that reality conform to the vision, regardless of present costs or contradictions. The game starts at the point where the future is treated as more authoritative than observable reality.

How It Works

The pattern typically follows this sequence:

  1. A future end-state is defined as necessary, inevitable, or morally required.
  2. Present evidence, costs, and outcomes are evaluated primarily through their relationship to that end-state.
  3. When evidence contradicts the vision or costs become high, the response is to protect the vision rather than revise it.
  4. Contradictory data is reframed as temporary, necessary, or caused by insufficient commitment.
  5. The vision remains fixed. Only the justifications change.

Over time, this creates growing misalignment between the claimed destination and observable reality.

Common Tactics

  • Treating the end-state as automatic justification for present costs or failures
  • Dismissing contradictory evidence as temporary or caused by insufficient implementation
  • Reframing human or systemic costs as necessary sacrifices on the path to the goal
  • Attacking critics as enemies of the future rather than responders to present evidence
  • Perpetual Horizon — Continuously extending the timeline ("not yet," "we need more time," "we haven't gone far enough")
  • Using the moral or historical weight of the destination to justify methods that would otherwise be rejected

Real-World Effects

  • Chronic gap between stated goals and actual outcomes
  • Repeated justification of high human or economic costs in service of an unachievable or poorly specified vision
  • Weakened feedback mechanisms that would normally allow course correction
  • Concentration of power in those who claim to be guardians of the future
  • Erosion of accountability, as failures can always be attributed to insufficient commitment or external interference

How It Corrupts the Player

The End-State Override Game tends to corrupt judgment through several mechanisms:

  • Moral licensing — The perceived righteousness of the destination is used to justify increasingly costly or coercive means.
  • Reality discounting — Present evidence loses authority relative to the future vision.
  • Identity fusion — The player’s sense of meaning becomes tied to the realization of the end-state, making correction feel like betrayal.
  • Justification inflation — As costs accumulate, the required explanations become more elaborate and detached from observable results.
  • Perpetual Horizon — Failures are continuously reframed as temporary stages rather than signals that the vision may be flawed.

Calibration Failure

The core calibration failure of this game is the inversion of the feedback loop. A calibrated approach uses present evidence to revise future expectations. The End-State Override Game uses future expectations to reinterpret present evidence. This reversal prevents normal correction and allows errors to compound over time without triggering meaningful adjustment.

How to Refuse It

  • Treat any detailed end-state as a working hypothesis, not a moral or historical certainty.
  • Establish clear, falsifiable criteria for what would count as evidence against the vision.
  • Refuse to grant the future automatic authority over the present. Present evidence, costs, and outcomes must remain the primary standard.
  • Apply the same standards of evidence and accountability to transformative visions that you would apply to any other claim or project.
  • Maintain separation between commitment to long-term improvement and commitment to any *specific* detailed end-state.

Relationship to Other Games

The End-State Override Game frequently interacts with or generates:

  • Reality Override Game — Present contradictory evidence is overridden to protect the future vision.
  • Slave Owner Game — Coercion can be justified when the end-state is considered sufficiently important.
  • Narrative Control Game — Stories and language are shaped to keep the vision credible despite accumulating failures.
  • Entrenchment patterns — As investment in the vision grows, the cost of admitting error increases.

Connection to Mastering Reality

Mastering Reality directly counters the End-State Override Game by refusing to subordinate present evidence to future visions. It treats all models — including compelling visions of the future — as provisional and subject to correction by observable results. Hidden Mastery develops the capacity to hold deep commitment to improvement while granting no particular vision immunity from reality.

This game remains in Permanent Beta.
